What is a Bi-Directional Amplifier (BDA) and Distributed Antenna System (DAS)?

A BDA is a device which is used to improve radio communications in an area where radio signal levels are degraded due to obstacles in the radio path. BDA’s are bi-directional and are utilized for full duplexed frequencies. BDA’s are not designed to work with Simplex frequencies. The BDA is the heart of the in-building DAS and has specific RF filtering to limit signals to the specific radio system.

The BDA captures downlink radio signals via an outside donor antenna and coaxial cable and feeds the signal to the BDA. Amplified by the BDA, the radio signals are distributed to the coverage area by the DAS (a network of coaxial cable, couplers, splitters and indoor antennas). Once the BDA and DAS are fully implemented, portable radio users within the coverage area would be provided seamless coverage throughout the coverage area, without any operational changes; for example, changing frequencies, talk group or radios.

NFPA 72 & IFC 510

Both NFPA 72 and IFC 510 have outlined requirements that buildings need to meet with regards to public safety radio coverage. These codes require all buildings to meet a minimum signal strength for public safety radio services throughout, allowing communication between first responders and their respective radio system. Any building not meeting the minimum signal strength requirement for the respective codes must be equipped with a system that will allow compliance.

Why CTS?

Critical Tech Solutions (CTS) is able to use the latest technologies from a multitude of manufacturers to design a customized system that meets your specific requirements and is fully compliant with all codes.

Our expert consultants and engineers design & install state-of-the-art BDA/DAS systems throughout Tennessee to support 4G/5G (LTE) protocols as well as private land mobile radio (LMR) systems in VHF, UHF, 700 MHz and 800 MHz. In partnership with Motorola Solutions, Inc., we have completed many BDA installations throughout East Tennessee in Kingsport, Jonesborough, Knoxville, Maryville, Cleveland & Chattanooga that improved in-building coverage for first responders operating on TACN, TVRCS & Knox County’s P25 System.

If you’re looking to improve radio or cellular coverage outdoors with a signal booster and/or by elevating a portable antenna 20-50’ in minutes, please check out The RATT telescoping mast system.
